Cheddar’s Casual Café recently opened their doors to a second Orlando location near UCF. Texas-based Cheddar’s has repeatedly garnered No. 1 ratings from Zagat, Consumer Reports and Nation’s Restaurant News for food quality, customer experience, value and atmosphere. Hello scratch kitchen.

Spork is getting a taste of Cheddar’s, we’ll be sure to share our menu picks and more soon. In the meantime here’s a bit about one of Orlando’s newest restaurants.

“More than 90 percent of the food we serve at Cheddar’s is handmade from scratch, using fresh ingredients that arrive daily to a kitchen twice the size of the average restaurant kitchen, with up to three times the average number of cooks,” said Cheddar’s Vice President of Culinary Robert Pesch.

In each restaurant, dozens of culinary team members prepare Cheddar’s dishes by hand using the company’s exclusive recipes. The menu offers a wide variety of delicious selections including steaks seasoned with a special blend of herbs, ribs slow-smoked for four hours in-house, hand-cut seafood, crisp salads, generous pastas, classic burgers, chicken and more.

True to their Texas roots, the designer-quality interior and exterior features real copper awnings, Austin chalk stone from a Texas quarry, solid cherry and walnut butcher-block table tops, cedar millwork and a granite bar top.

Cheddar’s is dedicated to bring people back to the table to reconnect over a meal. Now through December 7 guests are invited to share a holiday meal memory about someone they’re missing this season! Three winners will receive a reunion prize package with a $1,000 Visa gift card and a $250 Cheddar’s gift card. Click here to share your story.

It may be turkey week, but we’re still swooning over burgers. Earlier this week (thanks to Yelp) we visited Smashburger to taste some of the newest burgers in town. The Denver based company is bringing their concept to Orlando with a menu created with regional flavors and tastes in mind.

Smashburger’s secret is in the burger smash, they start with 100-percent—fresh, never frozen, all-natural Certified Angus Beef and the beef is smashed on a 400 degree flat grill to sear in the juicy flavor. Beyond burgers, they also serve up grilled and crispy sandwiches, gargantuan salads and a variety of other sides including rosemary and garlic Smashfries.

During our burger feast of 2015 we sampled several burgers, a variety of sides and a handful of shakes. Here’s our Smashburger menu picks!

  • Classic Smash: American cheese, Smash Sauce, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, pickles and onion on and egg bun. An exceptional fluffy, fresh bun stuffed with high quality beef and crunchy, fresh veggies. You can hear the lettuce crunch as you take that first bite, followed by a flavor blend of Smash Sauce ketchup and juicy beef. If you’re going to call yourself a burger joint, your classic burger should be exceptional, and it was.
  • Buffalo & Blue Cheese Crispy Chicken: The crispy chicken sandwich is composed of Frank’s Redhot Buffalo Sauce, blue cheese crumbles, lettuce, tomato and mayo on an egg bun. The crispy chicken is pounded out flat and covered with all my favorite toppings. Ask for extra hot sauce if you like it super spicy!
  • Smashfries: Skinny steaming hot fries tossed in Italian olive oil, rosemary and garlic. Mmm there’s nothing better than piping hot fries, served fresh with your burger. These seasoned fries were covered in just the right amount of flavor to be interesting, but not overpowering. Put away the ketchup, you won’t need anything extra for these tasties!
  • Fried Pickles: Smashburger, you must know the way to my heart. Lightly breaded, delightfully crunchy and served with a creamy dipping sauce. The pickles were a little on the salty side, which I love, you just probably want to share this abundant portion of pickles with a friend.
  • Haystack Onions: Sometimes onion rings are too thick, greasy and the breading falls off the onion while you’re taking a bite. But these tasty onions are lightly battered, curly and served with a tangy dipping sauce. More please!

Smashburger opens today at 3162 East Colonial Drive and next Wednesday at 334 N. Alafaya Trail. http://smashburger.com/

Most Indian food is well, intimidating if you’re not familiar with the flavors and what to order. With so many regional variations, Indian cuisine is often influenced by different cultures, vegetation and time periods. American Gymkhana’s modern approach is sure to liven up your palate and introduce you to some new flavors.

Their menu highlights both traditional and contemporary dishes that combine imported Indian and locally-sourced ingredients. American Gymkhana’s Chef, Aarthi Sampath, began cooking in her family’s home in India at age 11. Throughout her career she has worked with some of the best chefs in the industry worldwide. Sampath uses imported spices sourced from Indian markets complemented by Florida’s local ingredients to create a balance of traditional and modern cuisine that expresses her heritage and diverse background.

Equally as impressive as the menu and sourced ingredients are the cocktails. American Gymkhana’s mixologist, Hemant Pathak, has traveled the world infusing inspirations from his travels into his cocktail creations. He’s world renowned and you can taste his experience and expertise with every sip. American Gymkhana’s chic cocktail lounge offers contemporary cocktails that mix traditional Indian herbs, spices and house made bitters with an extensive selection of imported artisanal spirits.

Here’s what we ordered and thoroughly enjoyed!

  • Hendrick’s Smash – A surprisingly refreshing smash with Hendrick’s Gin, St. Germain, fresh cucumber juice, lemon and mint leaves. A cocktail so smooth you’ll forget it’s layered with gin! Perfectly flavored and not bitter, the flavors are reminiscent of a luxurious spa water flavored with cucumbers. My husband was constantly swatting me away as I kept stealing sips of his drink, we’d go back even if just for this drink in the bar!
  • Sparkling Saffron – A sophisticated sparkling wine cocktail with the aromatics of saffron. I know, saffron in a drink? Sounds crazy, but the saffron added depth and variety to the drink, as it should since the saffron syrup takes 24 hours to craft before its ready for consumption!
  • Zaffrani Lobster – Tandoori lobster tail with spiced herb butter, marinated for 12 hours. Incredible. The end. No, but really the succulent lobster melted on my fork, no knife required! Order the lobster and your taste buds will rejoice.
  • Pistachio Chicken – Roasted pistachio cream sauce with green cardamom and also roasted for 12 hours. Buttery, tender and served family style. Pair with their Zeresch Berry Pulao Rice and you’ll never look at chicken the same. Similar to the Zaffrani Lobster, the chicken was so tender you could slice it with your fork.
  • Royal Kulfi – A grand finale of sweet basil seeds, rose petals anglais and a spiced crumble. A semi-savory dessert comparable to creamy gelato meets luscious cheesecake. A fabulous end to our meal and we cleared this plate quickly!

American Gymkhana, we will be back for more! Thanks for sharing your goodness with Spork.

November and December are two of my favorite months, sure the Christmas lights are pretty and it finally cools off in Orlando, but what I really enjoy is all the feasting! Anyone that tries to start a diet between now and New Year’s is pretty much doomed. So, you might as well enjoy all the tasty treats around town while they last.

As part of my recent “indulgent diet” we ventured over to Bonefish Grill to taste their new Colossal Seafood menu. I’ve always been a fan of Bonefish, between the menu variety, savory seafood and atmosphere suitable for any occasion, Bonefish is a delightful place to satisfy your seafood craving without exploding your bank account.

Here’s some of our menu picks from this weekend’s visit:

  • Ahi Tuna Sashimi: Premium sushi grade, sesame-seared rare with wasabi, pickled ginger and served over a decadent mellow, yet flavorful sauce. I’m pretty sure I became a member of the “clean plate club” after inhaling this dish. Their ahi tuna is consistently fresh, flavorful and still my favorite version in town. Bonus points if you can use their chopsticks!
  • Filet + Colossal Shrimp Scampi – A tender 6 oz. USDA Choice sirloin topped with three colossal U-12 shrimp and a scampi butter sauce. For a restaurant known for seafood, their steak was pretty darn tasty as well. The filet was tender and seared with perfect diamond grill marks. The scampi butter sauce pulled all the flavors together between the steak, colossal shrimp and spaghetti squash side. The plate was bursting with color, flavor and the scrumptious spaghetti squash rounded out the plate nicely.
  • Kate’s Wild North Atlantic Haddock – A mild, sweet white fish, garlic crumb dusted, wood-grilled and topped with feta, artichokes, lemon basil butter sauce all served on a bed of mashed potatoes. The light breading added a unique texture to this mild fish and the feta was the perfect finishing touch. Between the artichokes, fresh fish and lemon basil, your taste buds will be on flavor lovin’ overload.

Boasting over 100 televisions and Florida roots, Duffy’s Sports Grill serves up freshly prepared ingredients and a menu for everyone’s palate in your party.  Signature favorites include their Hangover Burger, All American Bloody Mary (served with a burger slider) and 15 dishes containing fewer than 580 calories.  Even better Duffy’s offers 2-for-1 drinks all day, every day, on everything from the bar, including top-shelf cocktails, premium wine and bottled beer. Yep, that even includes their Ultimate Patron Margarita.

Also impressive is the lively atmosphere. On a Wednesday night the restaurant was full and buzzing with sports enthusiasts. The space is well lit, clean and full of knowledgeable, friendly servers – a far cry from most sports bars in town.  We enjoyed a wide range of menu items last night, here’s some of our favorite dishes and drinks from Duffy’s Sports Grill.

  • Ultimate Patrón Margarita – Rimmed with the proper amount of salt and filled with Patrón Silver, Triple Sec, fresh lime juice and Patrón Citrónge. Yep, you get two for $14.00!
  • Cotton Candy Cosmopolitan – Served with real cotton candy, Pinnacle County Fair Cotton Vodka, cranberry juice and fresh lime juice. Two for $10.00
  • Pineapple Mojito – Exceptionally sweet and served with Cruzan Citrus, Fresh Golden Ripe Pineapple, Fresh Lime, Mint and uniquely garnished with rock candy Two for $8.00.

  • Firecracker Shrimp – A clever presentation, these tender, crispy shrimp are tossed in a creamy yet spicy sauce, $9.99.
  • Korean Beef Tenderloin Mini Tacos – On the spicier side, but full of flavor and topped with cilantro-onion relish and a chile garlic sauce, $7.00.
  • Freshly Made Guacamole – Creamy and full of fresh avocado chunks, this guacamole is made fresh to order in-house and served with salted tortilla chips, $8.99.
  • Jumbo Wings – Choose between 10 sauces ranging from Honey Garlic to Atomic. The plump, juicy oversized wings come hand-breaded or “naked”, tossed in your choice of sauce with blue cheese and celery. Ten wings for $10.99.
  • The Hangover Burger – Farm fresh sunny side up egg, pepper crusted bacon and two slices of American cheese wedged between a fluffy bun with sesame seeds. All burgers are made with 100% Certified Angus Beef, a cut above USDA Choice. This burger is served with fries and you can even substitute your bun for a Pretzel Roll, $11.99.
  • Crunchy Fried Cheesecake – Our favorite dessert of the evening, a fried creamy cheesecake served with two scoops of vanilla ice cream, Ghirardelli caramel sauce and whipped cream. Between the Ghiradelli and fried goodness you’ll forever compare this dessert to “normal” cheesecakes, $5.99.
